The Truth About Sugars In Smoothies

Sugar has gotten a lot of bad press recently.

Sugars In Smoothies

At SmoothieBox we believe there is a big difference between added sugars and naturally occurring sugars.

We make sure to never add processed sugars (high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, honey, or molasses) to our Super Smoothies.

The carbohydrates and sugars in our Super Smoothies only come from fruits and vegetables.

This is important because fruits and vegetables provide other important nutrients such as protein, fiber, calcium, folate, and vitamins A, C, and D.

It is a reality that90% of Americans don’t get enough fruits and vegetables, so we are here to help you achieve balance to your diet in the most convenient way possible.

However, just because a lot of smoothies have no added processed sugars doesn’t mean they don’t contain any sugar and are always good for you. All fruit smoothies, for example, typically have amounts of sugar that are too high and can cause unhelpful spikes in your sugar level.

A majority of smoothies on the market contain up to 60g of sugar—even many “green smoothies.”

That nutritional content is equivalent to eating a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios with milk! (Don’t believe us? Just look at the nutrition facts of your favorite smoothie establishment. And, don’t forget to look at the serving size and do the math!)

Here at SmoothieBox, we strive for a balance of proteins, fats, and carbs.

We want to provide you a smoothie option that you can trust to fuel your body right.

In a recent article on Livestrong.com, Jackie Newgent, RDN, culinary nutritionist and author of The All-Natural Diabetes Cookbook delved into this exact subject.

Newgent says, “A smoothie is ‘healthy’ when it’s not simply a milkshake or sugar ‘bomb’ in disguise. Ideally, a healthy smoothie is based on wholesome ingredients and has a balance of macronutrients - good carbs, protein and healthy fats.”

So, if you are looking for an all-fruit dessert smoothie to satisfy your sweet tooth, SmoothieBox may not be for you. Our members love us because we jumpstart them on a healthier journey by providing an easy and convenient way to consume organic fruits and vegetables, fat, and protein from real, simple, ingredients.
